MONSTER MUSKIES

Muskie - 68 inch Lake Lac Courte Oreilles being spawned in the 1950sAAA.jpg

Is this the Largest Muskie Ever Spawned?

This photo is on display at the Wisconsin DNR hatchery in Spooner, Wisconsin.  The photo shows what may be the largest muskie ever spawned.  The giant muskie was measured by the Wisconsin DNR spawning and egg-taking crew at a whopping sixty-eight inches!  Yes, you read that right...68 inches!  Look at the length of that muskie's head!  The giant muskie was netted in Musky Bay of Big Lac Courte Oreilles Lake near Hayward, WI., in the 1950's.  Note how much larger the muskie was than the holding tank.  I have spoken with many musky anglers over the years and some don't believe muskies could ever grow to even 60-inches...well, here's the proof they grow beyond sixty inches.  Big Lac Courte Oreilles Lake has a history of giant muskie catches.  Big Lac Courte Oreilles Lake produced Cal Johnson's 60-1/2 inch, 67 lbs-8 ounce, IGFA World Record Musky in 1949.  Giants still swim in the clear waters of Big Lac Courte Oreilles Lake.  Thanks to stocking efforts, Big Lac Courte Oreilles Lake has experienced a population expansion of normal-size muskies, which are growing larger every year with the chance to hook into that giant of a lifetime.  Give me a call if you want to fish legendary Big Lac Courte Oreilles Lake.

Hayward Area Giant

This Hayward area giant was netted by the WDNR fisheries staff during spawn egg operations from a Hayward-area lake in 2018.  The lake the giant muskie was netted from, doesn't get as much fishing pressure as other well-known Hayward-area muskie lakes.  The WDNR staff estimated the muskie was mid-50 inches in length.  The particular lake has a history of producing large, heavy muskies.  This is one of my favorite Fall muskie lakes.  I make it a point to target this lake in the Fall when the lake's giant muskies are building fat for the winter.  This lake is not an action lake, but rather it's a trophy lake.  On this lake an angler will either go home with zero or they'll get a giant and be a hero.  If you want to give this lake a try in the Fall, then call me.

How Long is this Giant Muskie?

This photo is of two muskies engaged in the spawning process in Lake Mille Lacs.  The photo was sent to me a few years ago by a fellow musky hunter who took the photo.  He has caught hundreds of muskies and he's very good at estimating the size of muskies he sees.  I can assure you that he knows muskies.  He said the smaller muskie swimming with the giant female, was about 40-inches in length.  Very few anglers ever have the fortune to see a muskie as large as the muskie in the photo.  I won't tell you the length he said he thought the larger muskie was.   You decide that on your own.  Do muskies of that size still swim in the waters of Mille Lacs and other lakes and rivers?  Feel free to send me an email with your estimate of the length of the giant muskie in the photo. Share this photo with your friends and ask their thoughts of the length of this muskie. I'm looking forward to your replies.

Jaws of a Giant Chippewa Flowage Musky

Pictured is the lower jaw of a giant musky that was found by tourists at the water's edge on an island on the Chippewa Flowage in 1998.  According to WDNR fisheries manager at the time (Frank Pratt), based on the width and length of the jaw, the giant musky likely ranged in size of 58 to 70 inches.  At top right, the jaws are positioned with a measuring tape stretched to 58-inches.  Anglers are going to have to decide for themselves if 58-inches seems to be a high or low estimate for the muskies length based on the width of the lower jaw in the photo.  You be the judge.  For several years prior to the jaws being found, numerous highly experienced musky anglers reported multiple follows from a huge musky near the spot where the jaws were found.  Some of the experienced musky anglers who had the giant musky follow said it may have been a record class musky.  One angler even had the giant muskie hooked at a nearby spot, but it broke the line.  Is this lower jaw from that musky?
